Some things will resonate with you and some things will not. It’s a fact even when at times it is not very sensible between two differing parties. My kids will eat Brussels sprouts and I will not. Just doesn’t make sense.
Look at the review of books by your average reader. They are all over the board. Because a book can speak to you while in others, it’s just a book. It’s the same way with speakers. Some can put a fire under your feet or make you laugh. Others, you just want to get up and leave.
Listening to author panels a lot of times there is an author I have not heard of that just compels me to buy their book even before knowing what the book is about. That author has spoken to me on some cosmic level, for the lack of a better understanding of the process.
Churches change speakers for their Sunday sermons by inviting other pastors from other churches or having one from their own congregation speak just for the fact they may be able to reach someone the regular pastor can’t.
There are a host of reasons why you gravitate toward a place, person, or thing, someone else would avoid. And so it is with books on writing.
My shelves are loaded with writing books from character development, plot, dialogue, and all related subject matters. When I first started writing I would read one of these books and try to follow its advice. I would employ the learned techniques in my writing but a large percentage of the time I would just give up.
As I have matured as a writer I began to understand why.
Why is the reason or the answer to why is the reason.
I’ve made it a point to re-read all of those writing books to see if they resonate with me. If they don’t then I will donate them. If a writing book doesn’t speak to why you write then the book is of little use to you. But that same book may be someone else’s whole motivation and breakthrough to keep them pushing on.
This is a plug for you to buy as many writing books as you can because one of them could be your epiphany.
I can’t stop here without telling you what mine were. To keep this short I will just supply title and author.
