Mendenhall Glacier

Packaged with our whale watching excursion was a visit to Mendenhall Glacier. This was the main reason I wanted to visit Alaska. The retreating of the glaciers has increased rapidly and it may be possible they could vanish. Everyone who has ever visited here before has one unifying comment when looking at the glaciers, “A lot of it has gone.”

The park ranger I spoke with at the Mendenhall Glacier stated that since her parents were born in the ’60s, the glacier has retreated two miles. Two miles….. So much has disappeared that the falls off to the right of the glacier was not even there. Today, at least for me, it symbolizes the current condition of the world glaciers. Large flows of water run down Nuggets Falls in a roar.

The world’s glaciers are melting and the roar of the water is almost a call for help.
