South of Mexico sits an island where a young girl supposedly died. No one knows how she drowned, or if she drowned, or even if there was a girl at all. But legends are built on the perception that the teller and the listener believe.
Legend also states the island is haunted by the little girl’s spirit. Not that scary as numerous folklores are told and re-told of those previously departed still among us looking for whatever they hunger for. But let’s venture a little deeper.
Some say Don Julian Santana Barrera left his wife and children behind to isolate himself on the island. Why, because he was being rejected for his religious views. Add in a bit of alcoholism and the mixture gets creepier.
So strolling around the island trying to ease the haunting feeling of the place, either alongside the decreased girl’s spirit or not, he comes across a doll in the water. He picks up the doll, thinking maybe the girl’s spirit is in it. To further appease the girl he hangs the doll in a tree.
There are some conflicting accounts of Don. Some say he was haunted by the girl because he could not save her from drowning. And there are accounts the girl drowned in the ’20s and he didn’t get to the island till the ’50s.
But that is not the end of the story. Don started collecting more and more dolls and started hanging them in more and more trees. Now it just got real.
Today, the island is known as the Island of Dolls. Time has done a number to the dolls left. Half melting with sagging faces and blisters from the sun, mangled in faded, dirty cloths have dialed up the creepiness up a few levels. And don’t go there at night. There is a video of this and it is as bizarre as you can imagine.
Sounds like an all-inclusive resort.
