Bucket List

Is it true the term “Bucket List” was not known before the 2007 movie by the same name? Well, according to a Wall Street Journal article, the term was coined by screenwriter Justin Zackham for the film. Mr. Zackham had created his own list and this was his inspiration for the movie.

Now I thought the term would have been around for longer than that. A few articles have stated they could not find any reference to “bucket list” before the movie. But then I found someone mentioning a blog post from 2004 which is titled “Graduation Bucket List”. Now blog post dates can be manipulated so this would be unverifiable.

Anyway, the concept of such has been around probably since the dawn of time, just manifested in the form of goals and your dreams. Wanting to accomplish something would just be an item on the list. Like finish college, write a book, see Paris.

I’ve always been a believer in setting goals. Either in work or your personal life, goals give you a direction and pushing you to create plans for achieving these goals. And finished goals get you close to accomplishing your dreams.

Last night after diner, my family set around in the living room and we talked about our next vacation (Dreams), a mini-bucket list talk. My daughter asked that we inform her way ahead of time of planning the next vacation so she can start saving for the trip (Goals).

Most of my bucket list consists of seeing places as these are the ones I’m most motivated to complete. What is on yours?
