Spreepark, as it is known today, was an amusement park in East Berlin abandon since 2001. Its beginnings started in 1969 under the socialist republic and averaged 1.5 million visitors a year. Today only those of a wild nature scurry the grounds.
What has drawn me to this overgrown and rust-filled site is the fact the Ferris wheel still spins after nearly 20 years since being shut down. Powered only by the wind this massive ride groans and creaks as it goes around.
Once the Berlin wall fell, the park began its descent in popularity and mounting debt. It closed in 2001. The other thing that had drawn me to this interesting story was the owner shipped some of the rides to Peru. But when they were shipped back to Germany, customs found cocaine in a flying carpet. Talk about flying high.
There are some Youtube videos of the Ferris wheel turning if you care to look them up. And I’ve added just a few pictures.
