Ghost

As Halloween approaches, I thought about doing a bit of research about the scary. Most think of ghosts as some apparition, poltergeist, spirit, or wraith as lost souls wandering the world between life and heaven/hell. But I came across a little something different and done by an amazing artist.

In the 1980s, artist Wendell Castle created a Ghost Clock. Before you read any further take a look at the pictures first.

Back? Good. Doesn’t look very impressive, does it? We have a grandfather clock in our house and I have a white sheet. I’m sure I could recreate this.

Not that simple, this piece of art can be found at the Renwick Gallery in Washington D.C. Visitors to the galley would assume the real piece of art was just covered as it was being restored or something. Maybe to protect it or even being ready to be packed up and shipped off. That is what I thought looking at the pictures.

Again not that simple. If you were allowed to touch it, you would feel the “sheet” is cold and hard. From the Smithsonian American Art Museum, I quote.

“At first glance Ghost Clock appears to be a grandfather clock hidden under a white sheet. However, a closer look reveals a masterful deception: this entire sculpture was hand-carved from a single block of laminated mahogany. Its haunting stillness and silence suggest eternity-the absence of time.”

Cool right?
