Jedi Library

The last time we were in Europe for vacation, one of the many fascinating and beautiful places we visited was Dublin, Ireland. Within the city is Trinity College. Some of the notable alumni are Oscar Wilde, Francis Bacon, Bram Stoker, Jonathan Swift, among many others. It is the oldest university in Ireland as it was established around 1592.

While there, we toured a bit of the campus and visited the Book of Kells exhibit. The Book of Kells is an illuminated manuscript of the Four Gospels.

The other main attraction in Trinity College is the Long Room Library. At 65 meters (approx. 213 feet) no wonder it is called the Long Room. The library was designed by Thomas Burgh and built between 1712 and 1732. The vaulted barrel ceiling which magnifies the beauty of the library was added later, replacing a high flat ceiling. Double height bookcases line both sides along with gleaming marble busts of famous Irish writers and ancient philosophers.

It truly is a must see if visiting Dublin. Another fact: The Long Room served as inspiration for the Jedi Library in Star Wars. If I am not mistaken it was seen in Attack of the Clones.
