I don’t remember playing with Legos when I was growing up although they were around in the United States since the 70’s. But when we had kids they were a big part of our lives especially with my son and me. We put together small sets, larger sets, and made our own sets. Still today we buy something from Lego either as a gift or a stocking stuffer for Christmas. And I still stroll down the toy aisle looking at them.
When we actually realized there was such a thing as Lego Land in California, we had to go. At that time Lego Land was centered on kids of a younger age and was just perfect for ours. But they had it wrong. The place just wasn’t for awing wide eyed pre-teen kids but wide eyed dads also. It was an unbelievable place and we returned the next year.
Still today, I have a set I have not put together yet for various reasons. And in all this time I never took the time to explore the history of Lego. I did that today and have found a wonderful animated YouTube video about how it all started. It runs just over 17 minutes and well worth the watch. If you haven’t the time to watch I want to point out one simple fact.
The word Lego is derived from the Danish words “leg godt”, which means play well.
I have added a link to the YouTube video. Lego System
