A boxer, a singer, a football player, and a preacher walk into a… This sounds like the beginning of a joke but the movie One Night in Miami certainly was not. Muhammad Ali (then Cassius Clay), Sam Cooke, Jim Brown, and Malcolm X did actually gather in Florida as FBI surveillance would bear witness. But what really was discussed is unknown.
Based on a one-room play by Kemp Powers, he summed up the play as “a work of fiction powered by the truth.”
I did enjoy the movie on Amazon Prime and would recommend it and if you have a chance to see it, do so. I don’t want to spoil anything but did want to mention a couple of scenes I felt were powerful for different reasons. The first James Brown scene was shocking in its delivery. And the Sam Cooke scene of him singing a cappella.
A lot of the events are true, maybe time skewed a bit. Enjoy and let me know what you think.
