Serendipity

Sitting in North Carolina’s Outer Banks a beach house was close to being claimed by the ocean. Built in the 1980’s it had more than 400 feet of beachfront and was known as Serendipity. Now most of the beach has washed away.

You may recognize the house as it was featured in the movie “Nights in Rodanthe”, the big screen adoption of the Nicholas Spark’s novel of the same name. For the movie, crews made a lot of modifications by adding wraparound decks and blue shutters. But after filming they dismantled the additions.

For a time the house stood vacant while vandals pilfered what was inside. Soon the place was condemned and no one knew what to do with it and no one was willing to buy it.

Until Ben and Debra Huss came along. They had been huge fans of the movie and bought the house. But they did not leave it on the beach to continue to be destroyed by the ocean. They moved it to higher ground and gave it a makeover, replicating as much as possible to resemble the movie. The interior shots done in the movie were actually sound stages.
