Three Angels

Christmas is wrapped in tradition, pun intended, the tree and the presents, to name a couple. And the Christmas Cards.

I don’t believe Hallmark Card, Inc, shares their sales figures with the public any longer but according to an article in 1996, the Wall Street Journal stated one particular card had been sent 36 million times in 20 years. Hallmark has tried to discontinue the card but became inundated with requests for its return. You can still find the original card on their website. There are also variations of the same card that fit within specialized series.

The card in question is Three Little Angels drawn by Ruth Morehead. The enclosed message reads “God bless you, love you, keep you… at Christmastime and always,” penned by Barbara Burrow.

Ruth Morehead fashioned the angles from a photograph of her and her twin sisters standing side by side just as the angels are.

The popularity of the card seems evident as I think we all can relate to the third angel. We don’t all have our halos on straight at times. I think this speaks to our imperfect nature. And we have our eyes open for a myriad of individual reasons.
