Tiny Doors

Jonathan and Kathleen Wright were renovating their 100-year-old home in Ann Arbor, Michigan sometime in 1993 when a tiny door appeared in the baseboards. They found others near the fireplace, kitchen, and throughout the house.

When Jonathan put in a closet door under the stairs, he also placed a tiny fairy door about 6 inches in height right next to it. And he went a step further. When you open this tiny fairy door you can see a small staircase and railing leading up to a second door. All as entertainment for his daughter.

Today, you can find fairy doors in the city of Ann Arbor, Michigan, and some in the surrounding rural areas. The first public doors appeared in 2005.

Some are very elaborate and some are just replicas of the larger doors beside them. One door, if you look inside you will see a fairy version of the store it is installed at. The library’s downtown has its own door in the children’s section. This includes hollowed-out fairy tale books with windows.

Some of these doors are accompanied by guest books. People have asked questions of the fairies, and yes they are answered. Some have left drawings and stories. Mr. Wright has taken a lot of these and created a book called “Who’s Behind the Fairy Doors?”

All in all, there are some creative doors where fairies live in Michigan.
